The team has been unveiled as the winner in the ‘Best approach to environmental sustainability’ category having impressed the judges with our work to reduce the environmental impact across the lifespan of the projects we are delivering at Sellafield.

The awards recognise the vital role that supply chain companies play in helping the NDA group deliver its nationally important mission and clean-up its 17 nuclear sites across the UK. Recognised for blazing a trail in environmental sustainability, we are among just five winners in these high-profile nationwide awards.

Eldon Garnett, Managing Director – Nuclear, says: “We’re absolutely thrilled to win this award. It’s recognition at the very highest level that we’re at the forefront of delivering tangible environmental improvements in the nuclear supply chain.

“As a business we’re totally committed to improving the environment, continually striving for new ways to ensure our projects have a lasting positive legacy.

"I’m proud of the leading role we play with our stakeholders and supply chain family. I'm excited to see how we’ll continue to drive this crucially important agenda forward in the years to come.”

The winning entry gives a comprehensive overview of the advances made during 2023 and beyond, including:

The Infrastructure Strategic Alliance (ISA) framework at Sellafield.

  • Introduction of a fully electric site bus to transport colleagues on and off the Sellafield site.
  • Replacement of diesel generators with solar pods and replacing diesel powered machinery with solar and hybrid plant – and in the process, becoming the first contractor to fully embrace the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), on the Sellafield site.
  • Adoption of precast concrete and offsite manufacturing to streamline operations and reduce the project's carbon footprint.
  • Recycling of 1,100 tonnes of stone for use on two on-site substations, saving 4,356 miles of 20-tonne lorry movements.

Green Plant for the Future Day in Cumbria – to showcase and encourage the adoption of electric plant and vehicles, battery-operated equipment, and solar-powered lighting among local and national supply chain partners.

The ‘Great Green Challenge’ innovation event – to encouraging teams to pitch innovative ideas to reduce reliance on diesel, which led to the use of Solar Pod generators at Sellafield.

The entry also includes the work undertaken to align supply chain partners to our environmental aims, the use of our in-house carbon calculator, CarboniCa to monitor progress and drive improvements, and the work of our team to help school children make informed ‘green’ decisions through the ‘Green STEAM’ programme.

NDA Group Chief Commercial and Business Development Officer, Emma Ferguson-Gould, says: “These awards not only recognise how important the supply chain is to our mission, but they also showcase the variety of innovative work being delivered by businesses throughout the UK and beyond on our behalf.”

Members of the Nuclear team will be presented with the award at the NDA’s Supply Chain Conference, which takes place on 16 January at The International Centre in Telford.
