We’re committed to harnessing and increasing the diversity of our workforce, creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and respected for who they are.
Recognising our commitment to creating opportunities for young people, during the last year we’ve been working in partnership with Skills Builder to develop our new programme for early careers recruitment and to support more young people into our industry. By creating a supportive and transparent recruitment programme, we’ve seen a 170% surge in high-quality applications for our apprentice schemes.
The Skills Builder Partnership is a social enterprise working with more than 800 employers, education providers and impact organisations around the world to improve opportunities by providing clear frameworks for skills development. Eight essential skills are known to halve the likelihood of being out of work, increase earnings across a lifetime, and even boost wellbeing and life satisfaction. By providing a framework to develop these skills, the Skills Builder Partnership aims to increase access to these skills for everyone, improving opportunities and promoting social mobility, productivity and wellbeing.
Developing our early careers recruitment programme with Skills Builder
Using the Skills Builder framework to determine the essential skills that will support colleagues to thrive, these skills are outlined and embedded into role profiles which are shared with applicants with a preparation guide. This supports them to get a good understanding of the essential skills that are required for the role, and how to demonstrate them clearly during their interview and assessment.
Hiring managers are trained to identify and evaluate these skills during the assessments, supported by an interview framework that ensures that skill-focused questions are aligned with specific steps in the Skills Builder framework. These steps provide the foundation for everyone to position their skills accurately in the context of the role they’re applying for, providing a springboard for applicants who may not have received this support during their time at school.
"I’m incredibly proud of the positive work our early careers team have carried out in partnership with Skills Builder, and really look forward to seeing how this can be continued in other areas of our business"
As well as supporting successful candidates and directing their career development, the Skills Builder framework also provides objective feedback and direction to people who are not successful in their application, supporting them in their skills development to improve their future opportunities.
Katie Smith, HR director for Morgan Sindall Infrastructure commented: “The bronze excellence mark recognises our commitment to improving opportunities for young people by investing in skills development not just for our colleagues, but for those who continue to look for a new career opportunity. I’m incredibly proud of the positive work our early careers team have carried out in partnership with Skills Builder, and really look forward to seeing how this can be continued in other areas of our business.”
